What is Green Boating? Part II (Navigating Green Marketing in the Marine Industry)

What is green boating? Is there such a thing as a green boat? To what degree does something have to be beneficial or less harmful to the environment to be considered green? Is a sailboat considered inherently green? Is a hybrid superyacht green? A wooden canoe made from salvaged timber, a kayak made from recycled plastic? Are environmentally preferable boating practices aboard a vessel enough to claim to be an eco-cruise? Is green boating an unattainable goal or a set of principles and actions we take with the best of intentions- 'to do no harm'?

For centuries sailors ascribed to sustainable practices to survive long period of time at sea. Albeit sailors of yore had no mitigation for sewage treatment; they were able to survive for months at a time aboard ships using natural products, and navigating by only wind power, brawn, and intellect. Sailors had to be in tune with ocean currents, atmospheric conditions, and celestial bodies to navigate their way. Modern technology has supplanted much of our understanding and intimate relationship with the sea. As societies ascribe to a new consciousness that recognizes human impact on the environment, boaters are searching for alternative solutions to improve their environmental performance.

Efficiency of systems aboard boats have always been considered to extract the furthest range and power from a vessel. As the clean tech/green tech revolution captures the attention of the marketplace, the marine industry and boat manufacturers have been ahead of the curve. The marine industry has not needed to wait for cues from the government to forge ahead with the clean-tech economy and green innovations. Sailors, boat builders, and manufacturers have for years been pressing the envelope of what is possible in sustainable designs, alternative locomotion, best management practices, and stewardship of our environment.

Most products designed and built for ships have taken sustainability in mind from the first step of the design process long before being 'green' came into fashion. Products for the marine industry had to be rugged, durable, withstand the elements of the sea, and perform reliably. While the marketplace spins out cheap products for our disposable culture, most sailors understand the need for quality products that can last a lifetime.

Many consider it greenwashing to tout environmental benefits of products that are already prerequisites required by regulatory laws. Non-profits were once the only ones who would stand against those making unsubstantiated and or misleading environmental marketing claims. Now governments are increasingly responding to deceptive environmental claims with serious penalties.

Products or companies that use environmental marketing claims in the U.S. are subject to guidelines set by the Federal Trade Commission. Assertions of environmentally preferable traits or attributes may be subject to substantiation, and can create potential liabilities for those making the claims or selling the products. Green claims should provide substantive benefit to the environment, but compared to what, to doing nothing, to alternatives, or substitutes? Where is the balance struck between touting environmentally preferable products or services and just adding to the glut and confusion of the marketplace. Firms must weigh the benefits of environmental marketing with potential liabilities from such claims.

Firms ascribing to such claims may also be held to higher standards of ethical scrutiny and evaluation. Those who make green product claims should be prepared to have all or their business practices and processes examined to determine if they are in line with their environmental policy or marketing claims. Corporate social responsibility is not independent of manufacturing, packaging, or marketing an environmentally preferable product or service. Those who ascribe to higher standards of ethicism on the environmental are often held accountable to ensure all of their business transactions take place in a socially acceptable and environmentally preferable manner.

GREEN BOATING is dedicated to identifying and sharing knowledge which will help the marine industry protect the environment and stimulate sustainable innovations and designs. As we witness the greenwashing in the marketplace and the abuse of the good intentions boaters who wish to curb their impacts, we must be wary of those who seek to make a quick dollar from our good nature.

SOLAR SPLASH 2009 will be held this year in Fayetteville, Arkansas from June 27-31.

SOLAR SPLASH is the World Championship of intercollegiate Solar/Electric boating. Officially called the "international intercollegiate solar/electric boat regatta," the event takes place over five days. Technical Inspections on the first day, are followed by five on-the-water competitive events held over the remaining days. Points are earned in 7 categories starting with Technical reports that are submitted before teams arrive at the competition. On-site competitions categories include Visual Displays and Workmanship. On-the-water events begin with a Sprint and a Maneuverability qualifier. This is followed by an event called the Solar Slalom, which is a combination of speed and maneuverability. The final days are spent in the Sprint and Endurance events.

The first SOLAR SPLASH in 1994 was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and hosted by Marquette University. In 2000 the event moved to New Orleans to drum up interest from more southern teams, and then to Buffalo, New York, from 2001-2005. Solar Splash will be held in Fayetteville, Arkansas on beautiful Lake Fayetteville from 2006-2010.

SOLAR SPLASH is a practical educational experience, which helps to develop teamwork and inter-disciplinary skills. An entry can typically be pulled together in one school year at a cost of about $5,000.

What is GREEN BOATING? When I began the GREEN BOATING venture in 2007 I believed that there were opportunities to begin to address the environmental impacts of the marine industry. Boaters are not just passengers on our waterways but stewards of our marine environment. As those afforded the greatest benefit of these bodies of water that kiss our cheek when our bow casts its spray, we must understand the need to protect the balance of these ecosystems. For many centuries man has thought of the oceans and lakes as vast resources and sinks, where we could submerge our careless actions. As we begin to analyze and understand the data that scientists are observing from our oceans and waterways it is increasingly clear that we must confront our personal behavior and begin to mitigate our impacts if we are to preserve the beauty of our life on the water. There are many actions a boater may take, and products or innovations which can be adopted, but the biggest step one can take is to change the way you think. We must consider the impact each of our intended actions will have and determine if there are ways in which we can mitigate these effects. It is the supreme challenge of our generation, and perhaps our race.

The mission of GREEN BOATING is to create an open source for information on environmentally preferable boating designs, products, and practices for the marine industry. GREEN BOATING is dedicated to identifying and sharing knowledge which will help protect the marine environment.

The United States announced today its intention of instituting emission control standards for container ships, bulk carriers, and cruise ships in an attempt to mitigate expected environmental impacts from increased maritime shipping in the coming years. These USA EPA Boating Pollution Prevention Tips can help to curb environmental impacts when boating. Please boat responsibly.

Limit engine operation at full throttle.
Eliminate unnecessary idling.
Avoid spilling gasoline.
Use a gasoline container you can handle easily and hold securely.
Pour slowly and smoothly.
Use a funnel or a spout with an automatic stop device to prevent overfilling the gas tank.
Close the vent on portable gas tanks when the engine is not in use or when the tank is stored.
Transport and store gasoline out of direct sunlight in a cool, dry place.
Use caution when pumping gasoline into a container at the gas station.
Carefully measure the proper amounts of gasoline and oil when refueling.
Follow the manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedule.
Prepare engines properly for winter storage.
Buy new, cleaner marine engines.

Hmm...I like that last one, its time to innovate.

Vessel Cleaning and Maintenance Tips from USA's National Park Service's Green Marina Initiative

Clean Carefully
✓Wash your boat frequently with a sponge or nonabrasive pad and plain water. This approach is very effective at removing salt. Additional “elbow-grease” may be required to remove stains.
✓When detergents are necessary, use those that are phosphate-free, biodegradable, and non-toxic. Use soaps and detergents sparingly, because even non-toxic products can be harmful to wildlife. For example, detergents destroy the natural oils on fish gills, limiting their ability to extract dissolved oxygen from the water.
✓Wax your boat, if appropriate. A good coat of wax prevents surface dirt from becoming ingrained.
✓Clean teak with a mild soap and abrasive pads or bronze wool. This method is safe for the environment and better for the boat than the solvents found in standard teak cleaners, which tend to damage both wood
and seam compounds.
✓Avoid detergents that contain ammonia, sodium hypochlorite, chlorinated solvents, petroleum distillates, or lye.
✓Try some of the alternative cleaning products listed on the reverse side of this page.

Maintain Mindfully
✓Collect all paint chips, dust, and residue. Dispose of in trash.
✓Share leftover paint and varnish rather than storing it or throwing it out.
✓Leave empty paint cans open to dry out before disposing of them.
✓Use less toxic propylene glycol antifreeze instead of ethylene glycol.
✓Select a bottom paint developed for the mid-Atlantic region and apply the proper amount. Do not overapply.

Recycle Regularly
✓Recycle used oil, oil filters, and antifreeze.
✓Bring used solvents and waste gasoline to collection points on local hazardous-waste collection days.
✓Ask your marina manager for locations of recycling centers and information about hazardous waste collection days.

A French graphic designer named Jonathan Mahieddine has designed a boat which can be powered by solar or human power. He has taken the classic design of the paddle boat to another level by providing a sunning deck and a cockpit shaded by solar panels. While this design may not be practical for most, it would sure make for some clean green boating which would have very little impact on the environment.

Ballast-Free Cargo Ship Design

Researchers at the University of Michigan are developing a new design for cargo ships which could eliminate the need for ballast tanks. Ballast tanks are cited as environmental hazards as they often carry sealife in conjunction with water which is dumped in foreign ports. Ships take on ballast water for stability when they're not carrying cargo. They discharge ballast when they load freight, expelling tons of water and many invasive species such as the infamous zebra musscle.While Congress is considering costly legislation for tankers, the new design would eliminate the threat altogether.

The ballast-free ships have a constant flow of local seawater through a network of large pipes, called trunks, that runs from the bow to the stern, below the waterline, much like a submarine.

Not only would the newer design protect against invasive species, but researchers found it had an unexpected bonus; it requires 7.3 percent less power to propel the ship. The improvement is due mostly from water being expelled from the stern-end of the trunks into the propeller, allowing the ship to operate more efficiently.

Researchers concluded that the new design would result in a net capital-cost savings of about $540,000 per ship. Combined with the expected fuel savings, total cargo transport costs would be cut by $2.55 per metric ton.

International Association of Independent Tanker Owners Recommends Cleaner Fuel Mandates

INTERTANKO, the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners, is recommending emissions cuts for tanker ships. They have proposed a recommendation to revise MARPOL standards to bring shipping industry in line with other transportation emission standards. They are recommending the global use of Marine Diesel Oil (MDO) with specifications on its formula to produce a cleaner fuel. For more on this subject you can read the report here.

Suntory Mermaid II Uses Ocean Waves to Power Green Boat

The modern day champion of green boating Kenchich Horie has set off across the Pacific on another one of his legendary journeys to provide inspiration and scientific credence to his newest vessel's innovative design. The Suntory Mermaid II is powered by ocean waves. Fins at the front of the boat generate thrust by absorbing energy from motion of the ocean. As the fins absorb the energy they create a kicking action which increases speed and decreases the pitching of the boat.

The 9.5 meter 3 ton Suntory Mermaid II used recycled aluminum to create the unique aluminum alloy (A5083) that makes up its only 3mm thick hull. The boat is equipped with solar panels to provide electricity, and a sail and outboard in case of emergencies.

In 1996 Horie sailed the "MALT'S Mermaid" a solar powered boat built from recycled beer cans, from Ecuador to Tokyo.

In 1999 he sailed across the Pacific in the "MALT'S Mermaid II" a Catamaran built from beer kegs.

In 2002 he again crossed the pacific, this time in a boat made from recycled whiskey barrels.

His latest mission will take him a distance of 6,000 km from Japan to Hawaii. He will depart sometime in May of 2008. It is estimated the trip will take him two and a half months. Progress of the voyage may be tracked on his website.

Lagoon 420 Catamaran Awarded Mansura Perpetual Challenge Trophy

The Mansura Perpetual Challenge Trophy has been awarded to the Lagoon 420. The Mansura Trophy is the prize for the ecological design competition given by the Royal Thames Yacht Club.

The trophy was presented by the Duke of Edinburgh for leading the industry in green boating design. Over 70 of the Catamarans were sold in 2007, proving the design is commercially viable as well.

Starcraft Awarded the Environmental Award at the Miami International Boat Show

The National Marine Manufacturers Association handed out awards for innovative achievement at the 67th Annual Miami International Boat Show. The Environmental Award went to the Eco-Star 200 electric boat by Starcraft Marine. The Eco-Star 200 combines excellent access to electrical motors with exceptional maneuverability of twin propellers, all on the popular deck boat platform. The judges considered this design to be a positive step for both the boating industry and use of alternative energy propulsion systems.

EPA May Be Forced to Implement New Oversight of Recreational Boaters

A U.S. District Court Judge last fall overturned a 34 year old rule which exempted recreational boaters from having to obtain water-pollution permits required under the Clean Water Act. The permit requirement which originally only applied to large ocean going vessels must now be developed and implemented for all vessels in the United States by September 30th, 2008. The Federal Pollution Permit would be implemented to monitor and mitigate deck runoff, grey water, bilge water, engine cooling water, oil and gasoline seepage, and the use of copper bottom paints.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has identified the following potential environmental impacts from boating and marinas: high toxicity in the water; increased pollutant concentrations in aquatic organisms and sediments; increased erosion rates; increased nutrients, leading to an increase in algae and a decrease in oxygen (eutrophication); and high levels of pathogens.

There are already federal laws restricting the overboard discharge of oil, fuel, garbage and sewage, however these laws are difficult to enforce and often abused. The proposed legislation does not alter any of these existing restrictions.

Many recreational boating associations are fighting the court order and Bills have been introduced in Congress which would exempt recreational boaters from EPA oversight.

It appears much of the backlash associated with this ruling is from businesses in the marine industry, who fear more obstacles will prevent growth in their industry. Anyone who has ever owned a boat knows what a money pit they can be. It is not surprising that boat owners are decrying the idea of an additional tax on their pleasure.

Power boats do negatively impact the environment regardless of the scale of effect. The waterways of the United States are not the exclusive right of boat owners but the entire population. If one group wishes to utilize this portion of our national treasure they must insure that they do not sully it for the rest of Americans. Boats are for the most part luxury items, which leave a "keel print" on our natural environment. Boat owners have a responsibility to be good stewards of the resources they utilize for their enjoyment.

Green Boating takes pride in protecting our oceans and waterways and encourages other boaters to do the same.

Tanker Uses Kite to Reduce Fuel Costs

While ships have used wind to power their vessels for centuries, it has long since been abandoned by commercial vessels until recently. A new tanker has been outfitted with a $725,000 computer-guided kite as an innovative auxiliary propulsion system which will offset fuel costs and allow the vessel to run more efficiently. The 160-square meter kite is expected to reduce fuel costs by up to 20 percent ($1,600 per day) and significantly cut the ship's carbon dioxide emissions as well. The 132 meter long MV "Beluga SkySails" is a joint venture between two companies; Beluga Group and Skysails.

Human Fat Used for Earthrace's Alternative Fuel

The Earthrace, the 78 foot alternative fuel powered ocean vessel aimed at breaking the world circumference record is tapping a new source of alternative energy, human fat. After a recent liposuction procedure the ship’s captain, New Zealander Pete Bethune, donated enough of his excess lard to produce 100ml of biofuel. Two other patients also donated their fat filling up the Earthrace's tank with enough fuel to travel about 15km after it is blended with a mix of 100% biodiesel.

First Carbon Neutral Fishing Tournament

January 10-13 Miami Beach Marina will hold the worlds first fishing tournament which will offset its emissions in an attempt to be carbon neutral. "The Sailfish Tournament," organized by Dan Kipnis and Eric Peeples will mitigate emissions from boats through donations from sponsors Merrill Stevens Yachts and the Ruwitch Foundation donating money to Carbonfund.org. The tournament is being held to raise awareness of the Green Button project which asks boaters to donate a few cents more at marina pumps to help offset emissions. First Solar Powered Transatlantic Crossing by Boat

This year Sun21 became the first solar powered boat to complete a transatlantic crossing. The vessel, built and sponsored by the Swiss Transatlantic21 Association, traveled a total of 7000 miles from Seville, Spain to New York City without using a drop of fuel. Petition for Tighter Standards of Large Ocean Going Vessels Filed with EPA

On October 3 of 2007, a group of environmental advocates filed a petition with the Environmental Protection Agency to set new and stricter pollution standards for large ocean going vessels. The group was comprised of Earthjustice, Oceana, Friends of the Earth, and the Center for Biological Diversity. The group based their petition on the 2007 decision by the Supreme Court which states that the Clean Air Act gives the EPA authority to address global warming.

This petition marks a major step in the regulation of standards of marine vessels. These greener standards could be imposed not just in the U.S. but any country one might choose to visit. It is clear the future of the marine industry is in more efficient and cleaner vessels. We can anticipate that new designs will only reflect this trend. It may not just be fashionable to build a green ship such as Ethereal the 190-foot, $50 million superyacht being built by Bill Joy, the co-founder of Sun Microsystems. In the coming years, regulations may require green boating.

And take action; whether with a blog, or volunteering, a donation, or educating others. Let us all take start to take responsibility for our actions and do something about it. Those of us who are past the recognition stage of awareness of environmental problems need to move toward the action stages of solving these issues despite what the opposition may recognize.
